“Social Learning and Life Skills Training for Hatchery-Reared Fish”

Doug Thompson, Anders Halverson, and others have discussed the extent to which hatchery-reared trout have evolved away from their wild cousins, this the consequence of genetic drift and artificial selection for traits that suit fish farmers and their clientele. The pendulum has gone to such an extreme in that direction that Thompson can cite an article entitled “Social Learning and Life Skills Training for Hatchery-Reared Fish”. This is expressive of “a new scientific movement to try to train (hatchery) trout to act more like fish.” Should this effort succeed perhaps then anglers who relish telling tales of “fighting” the wily trout can justly tout their “superiority over a hatchery product that was” otherwise ” delivered to the battlefield specifically to lose the war.”   THE QUEST FOR THE GOLDEN TROUT, Thompson, 2013: 97.
